Chili Cookoff

Yay! It's over!

It's much fun every year--this year was the 13th Annual Chili Cookoff at Active Voice--but it does get a little crazy the last couple days before the cookoff.

This year we had 13 or 14 chilis--We presented Jolly Roger Pryate Chili--a sweet Caribbean chili. We were kind of going for the Most Creative Chili category, but we had some stiff competition--Chocolate Cake baked in a crockpot, served with Ice Cream. (although, personally, I think our HR Chili, which was simply vanilla ice cream, sprinkles with a side of pickle, was more creative--seeing as 2/3rd of the HR group was pregnant!). All in all, it was fun. C dressed me up as a pirate wench serving girl--sparkly skirts, laced bodice and gauzy shirt. It was much fun. The bodice--which was uber tight last year--was not so tight this year. That's a good thing!

Today, everyone is pretty low key. I still have chili to pack up and take home, too, although I think it's going in the freezer. I've had enough chili to last me for a while.

But in case you want to try something a little different:

2 C chopped ham (saltier is better)
2 Cans black beans, drained & rinsed
1 can diced tomatoes, undrained
1 (4-7 oz) can diced green chilis
1/4 C orange marmalade
2 T lime juice
1 t allspice (I used a little more)
2 T brown sugar
1 C chopped onion (my addition, sauteed before adding

Mix, heat through. Serve with banana slices (toss with lemon juice to prevent browning) and chopped cilantro.

Aaaarrrrhh. It's good.
