If only I had another rain barrel....

I could be catching some of this lovely lovely wetness to be saving for what promises to be a long, dry summer. Oh well. I'll just relax in the knowledge that the yard is getting a good soaking, that the existing rain barrel is full to the tippy top, and that we got the lawn raked and mowed before the rain started.

Yesterday, we unexpectedly got an early release from work! WOO! That morning, I'd switched bags, and couldn't immediately see where I'd tossed my housekeys. No problem. Since John and I carpool, he's got housekeys, and we get home together. No worries. Well, until I got off work early.

But it was a nice afternoon, the clouds had started to roll in, but still warm. I grabbed a rake from the shed and started raking the back yard. There were a lot of fallen pine needs, pine cones, small pine branches and a plenitude of walnut shells, courtesy of the squirrels and the walnut trees next door. Two yard waste bags later, the backyard was safe to mow. John came home a little early, bless his soul, and fired up the lawn mower, and it looks so much better! Woo!

Then we spent a nice quiet domestic evening--me watching various assorted Queer Eyes (for the straight guy, for the straight girl, for the english guys with really bad teeth)and reading a sappy Nicholas Sparks novel and him playing Worlds of Warcraft.

Judging from the steady rain this morning, and the forecast for a weekend of the same, I'm glad we were able to spend a couple hours outside yesterday. I think I'm going to have to schedule a couple days off work to finish digging out my flower beds and getting things planted. The weekend weather just isn't cooperating.

But the coffee's brewed, the paper is in, and it's time to go curl up with an affectionate kitten.

1. Don't you compost?
2. Can I borrow some of your Queer Eyes?

We do compost, but pine needles take a long time to break down, so most of them go into yard waste. The mulched ones that the mower picks up (we're still using the bag, until we get the moss killer/fertilizer out there) go into the compost. :)

Queer Eyes are on TiVo. Come on down!

I have this thing going on about the new house where I refuse to do anything about the outside other then simple stuff until I can say "yep, most of the inside is done... we won't have to destroy anything outside".

So, no rain barrels for at least two more years....

We do have a compost bin though, but its from the last owner. Kind of scary to look in...

Our new house didn't require the kind of construction yours did!

We've kinda stalled on painting, but we're getting back into it. I'm totally into the outside now....I have flower beds to dig--also spurred by the fact that I moved 7 truckloads of plants and such from the old house--they're all living in nursery pots on the back patio. They *need* to get into the ground.
